Nail Polish Origins History

Nail polish is believed to have originated in China, and can be traced back to 3000 B.C. According to The People's Media Company, the early combination for nail polish was a mixture of bees' wax, gelatin, gum Arabic and egg whites. Gum Arabic is a natural product found in the African Acacia tree. The Web site also said some Chinese added flower petals of roses and orchids to their polish, and used natural pigments for different colors.

During the same period in Egypt, members of the upper class used nail polish similar to lacquer paint. This paint signified money and prosperity. Some believe that Egyptians used to paint their nails with strawberries or henna and that after a night on the nail, the color would remain.

Around 600 B.C., the royal colors in China were metallic, gold and silver, hence the nail polishes of choice were the same. If someone from the lower class attempted to wear nail polish, they were put to death.

It is unclear how nail polish evolved after these ancient times, but according to "The History of Nail Care," an article published in Nails magazine in 2007, by the 19th century nails were treated with scented red oils and polished with chamois cloth. A century later, some women massaged their nails with tinted powders and creams and then polished them to make them shine. One product used was Graf's Hyglo nail polish paste. During this period women used a clear varnish applied with a tiny brush made from camel hair.

In the early 1920s, when automobile paint was invented, it inspired Michelle Ménard to modernize the nail polish we use today.

According to the Web site for the nail polish brand OPI, most nail polishes are now made from nitrocellulose dissolved in a solvent. A Sept. 7, 2006 article in The New York Times reported that several makers had agreed not to use dibutyl phthalate, which was linked to testicular problems in animals and humans.

There is nail polish to fit almost any needs. There are polishes to help you strengthen nails, make them grow faster, or even prevent them from turning yellow. Prices for a bottle of nail polish can range from 99 cents to more than $25, according to The People's Media.

Senior Shari Lau said she likes nail polish with a pearly look. When buying it, she looks for quick-drying formulas. Her favorite brand is Sally Hansen.

There are many brands to choose from, but the salon uses OPI since it has given them the best results in quality and quantity, said Melissa McKay, a stylist at the salon.

The New York Times article recommended keeping nail polish in the refrigerator. This will prevent it from clumping and prolong its shelf life.

Hydrate your way to perfect skin!‏

Hydrating Tips!
Healthy skin is within reach! Feed your skin water, skin problems will go away more easily. When skin is hydrated, its defense system will be boosted naturally.

Everyone loves smooth and supple skin. Skin's ability to retain water diminishes as we age. Many of us do not fully understand how to properly hydrate our skin. Regardless of how expensive your moisturizer is, if you've missed some of the small yet crucial steps, all your effort and money could go down the drain.

Step 1: Do not let your cleanser stay on your face too long.

It is important to find a fine balance in cleansing.
Don't lather your face too long. 30-60 seconds is all you need to clean your face.
Leaving the cleanser on skin too long will dry up your face.

Use lukewarm water when washing your face.
Scalping hot water might feel good during winter, but will deplete
your skin's natural moisture.

 Always put on your hydrating care immediately after face wash,
preferably within 10 minutes.
This 10 minutes is your golden period when your pores are open
to take in moisture and nutrients.



Step 2: Find a Perfect Balance.
Using ingredients known to retain water such as Hyaluronic Acid or Ceramide to keep your skin hydrated at all time. Be in touch with your skin. If your skin feels uncomfortably tight 30 minutes after face wash and starts to emit sebum, then your face is too dry. A well balanced skin should feel comfortable and naturally luminous.



Step 3: Use sheet masks strategically.

When you use sheet mask, the face is in direct contact with the mask and the serum. This vacuum environment increases surface temperature and opens up pores to take in nutrients and moisture. After 20 minutes, your face will be soft and supple. Use sheet masks 2-3 times a week or strategically before any important events to restore the perfect balance back to your skin.


Step 4: Stay hydrated in air-conditioning or heated room.

Keep the temperature around 77°F (25°C) to avoid over-drying your skin.

Use humidifier. If one is not available, leave a glass of water to increase the humidity of the room. Drink plenty of water to increase the moisture level in your body.

Using hydrating mist as much as necessary. Wait for 10-15 seconds after spraying. Use tissue paper to wipe away excess water to avoid the moisture in epidermis from vaporizing along with the excess water.
*Avoid using hydrating mist that contains alcohol! That will only make your face drier!

Want professional looking nails without spending your day in the salon? With some practice and a little patience, you can enjoy fancy nails anytime you want for only the cost of your nail polish!


Pale pink or light beigh base and bright white tips characterize the ever-popular French manicures, which are a common favorite request at nail salons everywhere. You may choose to paint on your nails or apply fake tips if you desire. Based on your personal preferences, a nail designer will give your nails a strengthening and conditioning workout prior to painting them. If you get your nails done with fake tips, you may have to make a trip back to the salon to get your French tips retouch when your nails have grown noticeably.

Keeping longer, healthy nails will be most conducive to sporting a French manicure. To complete your own French manicure, begin with the following steps to prepare your nails for the procedure.

1. Using a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover, wipe off any old nail polish or base coat prior to painting nails to make sure you get clean nails. Wash hands and soak in warm water for a few moments.

2. With an orangewood stick or cuticle pusher, gently push back the cuticles so they are all even with each other once the water has softened your skin.

3. With nail clippers, beauty scissors or a nail file, shape your nails evenly.
* Always file in one direction.

4. With a steady hand, carefully paint only the tip of each nail with a white hue. (Starting from the sides into the middle. Dot the middle as a guide. ) A second coat may be desirable, depending on the thickness and opaqueness of the polish. Allow polish to dry between coats.

5. Using a slightly transparent pink or nude color, paint the entire nail once the tips have dried. A second coat may be necessary. Allow nails to dry thoroughly.

6. Once all the coats have dried, apply a clear topcoat to protect your new French manicure. To lengthen the manicure lifespan, make an effort to paint a clear coat on each night. Be sure it has ample time to dry completely.

If you are feeling especially creative and ambitious, kick off your shoes and match your tootsies to your fingertips! ; )

This procedure is best performed on a lazy morning or evening when no other pressing errands or tasks will get in the way. After painting your nails, avoid doing things with your hands while they dry.

For an easier painting technique, check the beauty section of the department store for a French manicure kit. The set should contain, at the very least, nail polish in white and pink or beige and a clear topcoat. Some manicure sets - like J Nails - French Manicure Kit will contain tiny, sticky nail guides. These make the manicure process 100 times easier by allowing you to place the guides on each nail individually, leaving a small margin where the polish can spill outside the tip without tainting the rest of the nail.

Start concocting a wildly modified French manicure - pastel shades for Easter, black and orange for Halloween, red and green for Christmas or add glitter to french tips. Have fun and remember, even if you find the do-it-yourself French manicure difficult at first, practice will provide you with the skills you need to create beautiful and perfect manicures all year long!

Time has flies and I am still surviving!!

It has been a long time since the dreams was trashed and roller coster went non-stop but I manage to stand up :D My hopes keep burning inside, fuel my activity toward building another business. Year end leave gave me some time to relax and day-dream a little..

Now with credits to Jas a great colleague though she has left my company, has made my very 1st website http://www.thatbeautyshop.com/ possible. A friend with a kind heart to share her expertise though our journey as friends was shorter than a year. I was deeply appreciated for her time and effort in adding colors to my life.

I am always blessed with lotsa great friends and buddies although there are always black sheep around, which is also the same reason why the black actually makes the great ones stand out!! Although I am attention seeking cos I saw no point in tagging with a whole group of people whom topic I am totally not interested in and yet have to smile and "act" along. I realise I enjoy a 2 friends outing compare to a group so we can concentrate on our catch up better. Maybe I am kinda weird but.. Hmmm.. I just love to be true to myself :P
